This half day visit will take us to Hru_ov basin, the part of the largest and the most famous water dam in Slovakia. This site, only 20 kilometres from Bratislava, is also the most important nesting ground for Common Tern and Mediterranean Gull in Slovakia. During the building of the dam the artificial islands were created which are now used by birds for nesting. Among the other rare species are present Red - crested Pochard and Yellow - legged Gull. The basin serves as a very valuable wintering area for migrating waterfowl like Cormorant, Pygmy Cormorant, Common Pochard, Tufted Duck, Goldeneye, White tailed Eagle, Bean Goose, White-fronted Goose and many other species. The valuable remnants of original floodplain forests and the Danube meanders are creating the surroundings of the dam. Our steps will lead into these habitats to continue our exploration. The building of the dam was strongly criticized by nature conservationists; they were trying to save the original parts of the Danube floodplains.
